Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of digital game-based mathematics instruction on learning behavior and academic performance among sixth-grade elementary school students in District 5 of Tabriz. This applied study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group. The statistical population consisted of sixth-grade elementary school students in District 5 of Tabriz during the 2026–2027 academic year. A total of 30 eligible students were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). The experimental group received digital game-based mathematics instruction using Wordwall and Matific for measurement-related topics, including length, perimeter, area, and liquid measurement, whereas the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected using the Learning Behaviors Scale developed by McDermott et al. and a teacher-developed academic performance test. The data were analyzed in SPSS version 24 using multivariate analysis of covariance. After controlling for pretest scores, a statistically significant difference was observed between the experimental and control groups in total learning behavior (F=28.66, p<0.001, η²=0.51). A statistically significant between-group difference was also found in academic performance (F=6.50, p=0.017, η²=0.19). The intervention significantly reduced learning-behavior scores, which, according to the scoring direction of the instrument, indicated improvement in positive learning behaviors. In addition, students receiving digital game-based mathematics instruction demonstrated significantly improved academic performance compared with those receiving conventional instruction. Digital game-based mathematics instruction appears to be an effective educational approach for improving learning behaviors and enhancing academic performance among elementary school students. Accordingly, the purposeful integration of educational digital games into mathematics instruction may provide a useful complementary strategy to conventional teaching approaches.
